Alabama Hit With Devastating Blow Before SEC Championship — And the Real Bad News Might Still Be Coming
Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer, general manager Courtney Morgan and the rest of the staff have put together one of the top signing classes in the country for the second consecutive cycle after finishing No. 4 overall in 2025 and closing the first day of the Early Signing Period (Dec. 3-5) with the No. 4 overall class and 20 signees for 2026. The average player rank of 93.78 ranks first in the country.
The group officially includes a trio of five-stars in No. 1 LB Xavier Griffin (Gainesville, GA), No. 1 CB Jorden Edmonds (Marietta, GA) and No. 2 RB Ezavier Crowell (Jackson, AL). Several other key pieces wasted no time taking the next steps in their football journey including No. 3 safety Jireh Edwards (Upper Marlboro, MD) — who was the first official announcement coming in at 6:17 a.m. CT. Four-star QB Jett Thomalla (Omaha, NE) was in the fold early Wednesday morning, too, as were several others.

As for the 20 commits expected to make it official? Status quo! All were signed, sealed and delivered (and announced by Alabama) by 12:20 p.m. CT. So how did it all go down on Wednesday? Bama247 provides a rewind on the day for some easy reading and for those who might have missed the action!

There wasn’t any time wasted from the Alabama Football Twitter Account on Wednesday morning. Six members of the class made it official before 7 a.m. CT, beginning with four-star S Jireh Edwards (Upper Marlboro, MD) at 6:17 a.m. CT. Edwards committed to the Crimson Tide in the summer and was completely shut down since that decision. Three-star S Rihyael Kelley (Cincinnati, OH) — the second consecutive signee from Winton Woods (OH) High School joining Justin Hill from the 2025 class, was added to the fold at 6:20 a.m. CT. Five-star No. 1 CB Jorden Edmonds (Marietta, GA) — who committed in late March and did not waver at all — joined three minutes later. A trio of Peach State standouts followed with three-star DL Corey Howard (Valdosta, GA), three-star OT Bear Fretwell (Brooklet, GA) and four-star IOL Chris Booker (Atlanta, GA) making it official within three minutes of each other.
There was a bit of a break on Wednesday morning before another big run of official announcements. Four-star OT Jared Doughty (Atlanta, GA) kicked it back off at 7:12 a.m.. A pair of in-state prospects — three-star LB Zay Hall (Tuscaloosa, AL) and five-star No. 2 RB Ezavier Crowell (Jackson, AL) — followed a few minutes later.

Four-star QB Jett Thomalla (Omaha, NE) — who had expressed plans to sign on Thursday during the ceremony at Millard South (NE) High School — decided to go ahead and make it official at 7:27 a.m. CT. The two-time state champion and multiple state record holder in Nebraska will be in Atlanta (Ga.) for the SEC Championship this weekend.

Two more in-state additions within 10 minutes of each other with three-star DL Kamhariyan Johnson (Muscle Shoals, AL) and four-star CB Zyan Gibson (Gadsden, AL) — who is the longest tenured commit in the class and decommitted/recommitted on Sunday night — made things official.
Bama247 shared a note at around 7:45 a.m. that three-star Owen Cabell (Nashville, TN) was no longer expected to sign with the Crimson Tide, while the hometown program Vanderbilt felt like the destination. The combination of No. 1 quarterback Jared Curtis, also from Nashville (TN), as well as JaMarcus Shephard headed to Oregon State in a head coaching capatice — as well as some NIL funds — made a lot of sense. The 6-foot-3 prospect flipped to the Commodores a few hours later.
As expected, one-time Illinois commit Javari Barnett (Tampa, FL) flipped back to the Illinois on Wednesday morning at around 8:45 a.m. as well.
Top-100 defensive lineman Nolan Wilson (Picayune, MS) made it official with Alabama at around 8:55 a.m. and this is a massive one. Wilson, who was heavily pursued by Miami for many months, always wanted to be in Tuscaloosa (Ala.) and all of the credit goes to defensive line coach Freddie Roach in this one.

Four-star DL Jamarion Matthews (Gainesville, GA) will have a signing ceremony on Thursday morning, but decided to make it official on Wednesday morning at around 9:06 a.m. and another big one came in two minutes later with four-star receiver Cederian Morgan (Alexander City, AL), who never wavered since the summer and didn’t blink with (JaMarcus) Shephard moving on. JuCo OL Tyrell Miller (San Mateo, CA) — who committed to the Crimson Tide soon after the Iron Bowl win — joined the fold about 20 minutes later.
Bama247 shared a note at about 10:30 a.m. on four-star LSU offensive tackle commit Bryson Cooley likely going to wait until Friday to make a final decision. Alabama is not out of the running for the Mississippi native, but it feels like the chances for a flip continue to dip the longer this goes on.
Four-star TE Mack Sutter (Dunlap, IL) — the top tight end target on the board since Bryan Ellis arrived on campus last winter — made it official with the Crimson Tide about 15 minutes later.
Five-star No. 1 LB Xavier Griffin (Gainesville, GA), who was going to wait to make it official during the signing ceremony at Gainesville (Ga.) High School on Thursday morning, decided to submit his paper work on Wednesday afternoon. The highest ranked commit in the class marked the 20th signee for the Crimson Tide.
RETURNING HOME: Five-star No. 1 LB Xavier Griffin makes it official, signs with Alabama Crimson Tide
As expected, three-star DL JJ Finch (Indianapolis, IN) announce his flip from Alabama to Tennessee just after 6 p.m. CT.
***Bama247 is also still tracking four-star LSU offensive tackle commit Bryson Cooley (Laurel, MS) — who originally had plans to sign on Wednesday — but has since delayed that decision. The Crimson Tide remains in the picture.***
