Eagles Star Misses Team Flight After Welcoming New Baby, But Still Travels Separately to Washington
In a moment that transcends football, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has joined Shawn Kneeland, the father of late Dallas Cowboys defensive end Marshawn Kneeland, to help expand the
Marshawn Kneeland Mental Health Foundation — a cause now uniting players and fans across the entire NFL.
Just one day after Shawn Kneeland announced he would donate his late son’s remaining $5.6 million salary
to support mental health programs for young people, Mahomes personally reached out and flew to Dallas to stand beside him at a candlelight vigil that brought together players, fans, and local youth organizations.
“This goes beyond rivalries or colors,” Mahomes said, his voice steady but emotional. “Marshawn’s story reminds us that every player — no matter how tough he looks — fights battles no one else can see. We have to take care of one another as people first.”
As Mahomes placed an arm around Shawn Kneeland during the vigil, the image of the two standing together in silence moved thousands to tears. They spoke about the foundation’s shared mission: to
provide mental health counseling, crisis resources, and mentorship for young athletes facing invisible struggles.

“My son would be proud of this moment,” Shawn said quietly. “He admired players who led with courage and compassion — and Patrick being here tonight shows exactly that. It means the world to me and to every parent who’s lost a child too soon.”
Mahomes pledged $250,000 through the 15 and the Mahomies Foundation to support youth mental health programs nationwide. The Chiefs organization also announced they will wear #94 decals on their helmets in
Week 10 to honor Marshawn Kneeland’s memory.
As the vigil came to a close, Shawn Kneeland looked up toward the night sky filled with flickering candles and whispered:
“My son’s name will always stand for hope. And tonight, that hope feels alive again.”
Through heartbreak and unity, Marshawn Kneeland’s legacy now reaches far beyond Dallas — shining across the NFL as a symbol of love, compassion, and the power of humanity.
