Once a rising star in the Denver Broncos’ secondary, a young player who showed flashes of brilliance and leadership has decided to walk away from the game — not because of football, but because of family.

At just 25 years old, former safety Caden Sterns has officially announced his retirement from the NFL. The decision marks the end of a once-promising career that began with so much potential and hope.

Sterns was selected by the Broncos in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft (No. 152 overall) and quickly impressed coaches and fans alike. As a rookie, he appeared in

15 games, making 49 tackles, 2 sacks, and 4 interceptions, earning a reputation as one of Denver’s most exciting young defenders.

But tragedy struck early in the 2023 season when Sterns suffered a

patellar tendon tear in the season opener. The injury required extensive surgery and months of rehab. Despite his relentless effort to return, he was never able to regain full health.

After being released by the Broncos in August 2024, Sterns received looks from the Carolina Panthers and Philadelphia Eagles, yet his comeback attempt ultimately fell short. On Thursday, he made it official — his football journey was over.

However, Sterns’ decision wasn’t driven solely by injury. In a heartfelt statement posted to Instagram titled “Goodbye Football,” he revealed that he is stepping away to care for his mother, who is battling cancer

.

“Football gave me purpose, but family gives me life. My mom has been fighting cancer with the same strength she taught me to play this game with — and now it’s my turn to fight beside her. I’m forever grateful to the Denver Broncos for giving me the chance to live my NFL dream, but right now, my mom needs me more than the game ever will,”

Sterns wrote.

Born in Dallas, Texas, Sterns was once a five-star recruit, originally committing to LSU before choosing the University of Texas. During his collegiate career, he recorded over

100 tackles and five interceptions, becoming one of the nation’s top safeties before heading to the NFL.

Though his professional career ended sooner than expected, Caden Sterns leaves behind more than stats — he leaves behind a story of perseverance, gratitude, and love. His journey reminds us that while football careers may fade,
